Clairo — “Sexy to Someone”
Validation through the eyes of another is the source for this new Clairo single “Sexy to Someone”. The Atlanta singer has a new album on the way and it looks like we’re going to be in our feels, as if we expected anything different. On this cut, Clairo sings about wanting to be the subject of her lover’s infatuation. “The reason she leaves the house,” she sings. Production notes definitely hit back to 2021’s Sling. Warm, evocative, and most of all, catchy.
Amyl and The Sniffers — “U Should Not Be Doing That”
Punk’s renaissance is in full effect with Amyl and The Sniffers’ new track. Vocalist Amy Taylor sports a delivery that is bratty, yet sincere. Lyrically, we see Amy giving herself words of affirmation and scoffing at those who say “She’s not doing it right.” All the while, the guitar work is crisp and hits an amazing payoff by track’s end. It’s easy to fall in love with this one.
Lip Critic — “The Heart”
If you’re tapped into indie music press, you’ve likely been hearing about the latest Lip Critic record Hex Dealer a lot this past week. The NY band blends dance-punk with hip-hop to create this mesmerizing fusion that hits the perfect balance. Track 3 “The Heart” is one of the album’s many highlights with its Death Grips-esque punchy and glitchy production With acts The Dare and now Lip Critic, this dance-punk, electro-clash revival might actually have some legs.
Mach-Hommy, KAYTRANADA, 03 Greedo — “#RICHAXXHAITIAN”
If you had Mach-Hommy providing us with the song of the summer, I applaud your taste. The collaboration between the two Haitian artists (Mach-Hommy / KAYTRANADA) and LA legend 03 Greedo is one that, on paper, might seem odd. Yet the result is a catchy, if not unorthodox house record. 03 Greedo’s autotuned hook shouldn’t work as well it does, but KAYTRANADA pulls it all together.
Vince Staples — “Shame on the Devil”
Vince Staples’ place in rap right now is interesting. He’s well-known enough to have his own Netflix show and is widely considered to have one of the best album runs in modern rap, yet he still seems underrated. His work has still remained excellent and now, with his latest record, Vince is looking inward. “Shame on the Devil” sees Vince at best, decidedly vulnerable and weaving narratives over lush production. May not be a summer smash, but one you’ll come back to year round.
Magdalena Bay — “Death & Romance”
Good news! Magdalena Bay are back with an incredible new single. It’s expected that we’d get an amazing offering this duo, but this new record, poised to be the lead single for a new album, might be one of their best. Mag Bay songs are always sonic treats and this one is no different. The progression the song is beautiful and by its end, it envelops you in this wrap of synths. Gorgeous from beginning to end.
Esperanza Spading and Milton Nascimento — “Outubro”
Esperanza Spalding’s aura among jazz listeners is one that deserves reverence. Known as being one of the bassists of the modern era, her path now leads her into the path of another great, Brazil’s Milton Nascimento. The duo’s new single together is a remake of the 1969 track on Nascimento’s Courage. Esperanza’s bass is warm and textures the track perfectly. If this song is any indication, this new record is shaping to be an all-timer.
