During the past few years, South Korea’s music industry has grown exponentially thanks to the help of global superstars BTS, who have emerged as one of the biggest boy bands of the 21st century. The fast-paced and exciting K-pop industry has reached far beyond the South Korean borders, becoming one of the biggest pop markets in the world. In the K-pop Rundown we highlight the top K-pop releases. Here are the standout K-Pop hits of winter 2024 so far.
ITZY – “Mr. Vampire”
ITZY’s pre-release track, “Mr. Vampire,” departs the group from its usual boisterous style, showcasing a more minimalistic approach in production with soft beats and piano chords. The production of “Mr. Vampire” stands as one of the most experimental ventures in ITZY’s career. The song starts off as a minimalistic r&b tune with soft beats that blend with piano chords until the snares kick into the chorus. This gradual build-up teases a percussive chorus, complemented by the inclusion of a flute. The result is a captivating blend of unconventional elements.
Sonically, “Mr. Vampire” is an automatic hit, boasting a catchy tune and chorus that seamlessly blends percussive elements with piano chords during the bridge, and to a certain degree, the production’s daring choices pay off. However, while the song excels sonically, it falls short in terms of vocal performances. Member Chaeryeong, who handles most of the vocal heavy lifting in the song, strains at certain moments. Main vocalist Lia, who was absent from the track, could have potentially elevated the track. While “Vampire” is a commendable venture into sonic experimentation for ITZY, the group’s own inability to vocally hold together the runs and high notes serves as a minor disadvantage to the track.
RIZE – “Love 119”
Rize’s third digital single, “Love 119,” presents a blend of hip-hop and R&B, exuding old school vibes reminiscent of NCT’s signature sound. The chanting chorus adds a distinctive touch, creating an infectious earworm that lingers. While lacking standout vocal or rap moments, “Love 119” compensates with its simplicity, which surprisingly adds to its charm. The absence of overly intricate elements allows the listener to appreciate the good vocals and the catchy nature of the track.
NMIXX -“DASH”
In their latest endeavor, “DASH,” NMIXX, the 4th generation girl group, fearlessly ventures into a fusion of old-school hip-hop and pop funk. DASH, a stark departure from the group’s prior works, stands as an admirable exhibition of their vocal prowess. The resonant echoes of the chanting chorus, reminiscent of the infectious allure seen in “Love 119,” establish an enduring impact. However, what sets “DASH” apart is its dynamic metamorphosis during the bridge, as funk rhythms seamlessly transition into a distorted guitar arrangement, revealing the girls’ robust vocal capabilities.
This unexpected twist injects an element of unpredictability, showcasing NMIXX’s adeptness at navigating diverse musical landscapes. The triumphant return of the chanting chorus further accentuates the song’s infectious appeal. While NMIXX has branded themselves as pioneers of ‘MIXX POP,’ a term they coined to describe a unique blend of K-pop and pop elements, the K-pop scene has long used the blend of these genres for decades, and for NMIXX, this has backfired for almost all of their releases up until their recent releases with the inclusion of DASH. As exemplified in this track, NMIXX’s winning formula is to capitalize on their exceptional vocals and steer clear of unnecessary sonic clutter like that found in their previous works.
IU feat. V – “Love Wins All”
IU, often likened to Taylor Swift in the K-pop music industry for her impressive songwriting and chart-topping prowess, unveils her pre-release track “Love Wins All,” an addition to her illustrious catalog leading up to her forthcoming full-length album after three years. Channeling the magic reminiscent of her iconic ballads like “Through the Night,” “Ending Scene,” and “Knees,” IU once again enchants with her trademark effortless vocal delivery and swoon-worthy lyricism. The song, predominantly relying on string arrangements, particularly piano and violin, showcases IU’s delicate and light vocal stylings. In “Love Wins All,” she serenades about unwavering love amid adversities. The accompanying 5-minute music video, featuring a storyline starring IU and V from BTS as a couple in a dystopian world, adds a cinematic touch to the heartfelt ballad. The narrative explores their journey to escape challenges, ultimately surviving through their deep connection and love for each other.
The song becomes a celebration of love’s strength, endurance, and transformative power. While the music video’s excessive length may lead one to get lost in the intricate storyline, the song itself emerges as a testament to IU’s finest vocal deliveries. “Love Wins All” resonates with its exploration of profound connections, the hurdles faced in relationships, and the conviction that love has the ability to conquer any obstacles. It serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of love and the importance of nurturing and cherishing relationships.
