Marvel Studios The Marvels

Captain Marvel is ready to return. After a mysterious announcement via voice recordings on Marvel’s social media yesterday afternoon, the first trailer of the anticipated Marvel Studios film The Marvels just premiered. But now, unlike the previous entry, Carol Danvers has company and this new entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe promises a fun, place-swapping adventure.

Nia DaCosta, known for her work on Little Woods and The Candyman (2021) succeeds Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck at the helm of the film. The Marvels includes some of the leading characters of the previous film. Brie Larson returns as Carol Danvers, also known as the powerful Captain Marvel. Samuel L. Jackson stars once again as Nick Fury, who we will soon see in the Disney+ series Secret Invasion. However, the MCU continues with the combination of their increasingly intertwined storylines. So, The Marvels will include Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, a huge fan of Danvers. Teyonah Parris also joins them as Monica Rambeau who gained the ability to absorb energy during the events of WandaVision.

Expectations were high for this trailer as information about the film was held under a tight seal. In addition, Marvel’s recent run of films has lacked the consistent quality that characterized the studio at the end of the 2010s. So, after a series of entries that range from the shallow and convoluted like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder to the poignant and successful Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, audiences and critics are eager to see how the next chapter of the adventure of Carol Danvers’ and her crew turns out.

We don’t get a lot of new information from the trailer. We get to see the accidental swap-placing of the titular characters that was hinted at at the end of season one of Ms. Marvel. The cast’s already shining chemistry hints that maybe we are on the verge of a Marvel-ous adventure.

The Marvels arrives in theaters on July 28, 2023. Watch the trailer below.
